Vera wins ratings battle for ITV

Crime drama starring Brenda Blethyn watched by 5.3 million, up by 300,000 on last week's opening episode

ITV's Brenda Blethyn drama Vera extended its lead over BBC1 rival What Remains on Sunday while BBC2's Simon Schama documentary The Story of the Jews began with more than 2 million viewers.

Vera had 5.3 million viewers, a 24.7% share, between 9pm and 10pm, up from 5 million (23.4%) for last week's series opener.

What Remains, starring David Threlfall, had 3.7 million viewers (15.6%) down from 4.5 million (20.6%) last week, also between 9pm and 10pm.

At the same time on BBC2, five-part history series The Story of the Jews began with 2.2 million viewers, a 9.2% share.

It was up against Channel 5's Celebrity Big Brother, watched by 2 million (8.2%) between 9pm and 10pm, and the opening hour of Channel 4's terrestrial movie premiere The Dilemma, which could only manage 600,000 viewers (3.2%) between 9pm and 11.15pm.

The second opening weekend helping of the 2013 series of ITV's The X Factor had 9.9 million viewers, a 39.1% share, between 8pm and 9pm, up from Saturday's 9.2 million (41.9%).

The Simon Cowell talent show beat the more restrained offerings of BBC1's Antiques Roadshow, watched by 5.2 million viewers, a 20.3% share, also between 8pm and 9pm.

It followed a double helping of Coronation Street, watched by 7 million viewers (31.9%) between 7pm and 8pm, beating BBC1's Countryfile, with 5.4 million viewers, a 24.4% share.

Channel 4 documentary Rebuilding the Trade Centre had 1.1 million viewers between 7.40pm and 9pm.

Earlier, the return of Andrew Marr on BBC1's The Andrew Marr Show, with guests including chancellor George Osborne, was watched by 1.3 million viewers, an 18.7% share, between 9am and 10am.
