BBC1 programme revealing Peter Capaldi as the new Time Lord pulls in 29.8% of audience share on Sunday evening
Almost 7 million viewers saw Peter Capaldi being unveiled as the 12th Time Lord on BBC1 on Sunday night.
The Zoe Ball-fronted special, Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, drew an average audience of 6.1 million between 7pm and 7.35pm on Sunday.
The special, which managed a 29.8% share of all viewing in its slot, had a five-minute peak of 6.9 million viewers from 7.25pm when Capaldi was revealed to viewers and briefly interviewed by Ball.
Channel 4's dark serial-killer drama Southcliffe kicked off with 2.2 million viewers and a 9.5% share of viewing between 9pm and 10pm.
ITV1's Law & Order: UK (4.2 million/18.5%) once again had the better of BBC1's The White Queen (3.4 million/14.8%) in the 9pm hour.
Other competition in the slot included BBC2's Das Auto documentary about the German car industry (2.4 million/10.3%) and Channel 5's Big Brother (1.4 million/6.3%).
At 8pm, the second episode of The Mill, Channel 4's 19th-century industrial revolution drama, attracted 2.3 million viewers and a 9.5% share in its hour slot.
The audience fell 500,000 from its opener last week, when it managed 2.8 million and an 11.8% share.
On BBC2, the final episode of the 20th series of Top Gear drew 4.7 million and a 19.5% share between 8pm and 9pm.
Earlier, the channel's coverage of the final day of the swimming World Championships managed an average of 800,000 and a 4.1% share from 6pm to 730pm.
BBC2's coverage of the final day of the Women's British Open, which ran from 1.55pm to 6pm, averaged 800,000 and a 7% share.
